James Hartley

Chief Executive

Executive Management

James Hartley co-founded Wealth in 2013 and has been Chief Executive since. He is responsible for the firm's direction, its partnership and its relationships with its largest clients. James spent the first half of his career in sterling bond markets and the second running client businesses. As a result he asks of every investment decision how it will look to the person whose money it is. He chairs the management committee.

James began as an economist in the civil service, forecasting public borrowing. In 1998 he joined a City investment house as a gilt and interest-rate strategist, and he spent the next decade writing about central banks for its fixed income clients. He then moved across to run its UK institutional client team and later its whole UK business.

He founded Wealth with Eleanor Whitcombe because he had watched too many good investment teams grow until they could no longer do what had made them good. He read Economics at the University of Cambridge. He is a governor of a secondary school in Lambeth and sits on the investment committee of a medical research charity.

At home in East Sussex he keeps bees, with mixed results.
